Thanks to Coach Thomson for his hard work and insightful
look at City rankings #4. With Palisades getting the #1 ranking for both their boy and girl teams the stage is set for a post season
ranking that will be based on head to head competition and not on paper. As you know, anything can happen in this sport and we
hope you just happen to come out and see for yourself what is going to happen on Nov. 17.    rankings #4

From the sound of the gun this race looked like it "could be the start of something big". And, it was as two big surprises emerged
- Mrgudic of Granada Hills became a big time runner and the individual winner and ECR won the boys team battle. Don't you just love
these surprises that come along in CC?

Oct. 17: Pierce College: Road to City: In a contest between two unbeaten West Valley teams, Birmingham boys made a big statement about who belongs at the top of the West Valley League standings. Birmingham was a convincing winner over ECR ( 20 to 37). On a very hot day, times weren't as important as where you finished in this race. The Patriots finished with four runners in the top 5 and that is the way they took care of business. Some results:
Ryan Alexander 16:19
Ezra Soriano (ECR) 16:29
Luis Solano (16:39)
Jordy Ceja (17:08)
Erik Sandoval (17:13)
Jonathan Garcia (ECR - time??)
Anthony Garcia (ECR - time??)

A big thank you to Erik Sandoval for reporting on this important dual meet for us. For more info on yesterday's races, go to:   link

Sept. 26: South Bay Cup: San Pedro, the #2 ranked City team, put 4 boys across the finish line in under 16 minutes. Breaking through that tough 15 minute barrier was the winner of this South Bay Cup, Steve Correa, in 14:49. With teammates Manny Vargas (15:25), Paul Garcia (15:49) and Charlie Nettle (15:50) in his wake, all indications are that San Pedro is going to have a lot to say about who wins the City Championship this year. Lorena Garcia made a strong showing with her 8th place in 17:24. Sophomore Danielle Nunez, winner of the City 800 Championship as a freshman, was 15th in 18:16.--Photo courtesy of Dean Lofgren

Sept. 22: Dana Point Invitational: Marshall High headed down south for this mega SS meet and came away with fine performances by Jose Arevalo (10th in 15:45) and Bradley Nabong (20th in 16:05). On the girls' side, Caroline Tan showed signs of brilliance with her 5th place performance in 18:32.   link

Bell Jeff: Boy Results      City Boys Combined    City Boys By School    City Girls Combined     City Girls By School

Sept. 22: Bell-Jeff Invitational: With so many City runners competing at Bell Jeff, this meet became important in both team and individual rankings. By winning her Varsity division, Marissa Williams (Palisades Charter) proved to be the top talent (top 10) among a huge field of quality runners. She solidified her position as the top City individual, missed Natalie Stein's (North Hollywood's 2000 City Champion) course record of 16:31 by only 16 seconds, led her team to a #2 City ranking and helped her team to a third place finish at this Bell Jeff Invitational. Palisades Charter, the #1 ranked City boy team, also made big waves in the boy’s division as Drake Johnston and Jonathon Tewodros ran big races with Johnston finishing 4th in 15:06 and Tewodros running 15:11 for 8th. Other outstanding performances were racked up by Ryan Alexander (Birmingham) who was 8th in 15:46 and Ezra Soriano (ECR) who was 11th in 15:15.

Drake Johnston ran arguably his best race to date as he led all City boys with his 15:06 4th place finish.   Seemingly unstoppable, Marissa Williams rolled to her biggest win this season by smashing a top field with her winning time of 16:47.

A big thanks to Eric Sandoval (Birmingham) for sending this youtube video link of Bell Jeff. A lot of City runners are seen here.

Sept. 22: Bell-Jeff Invitational: This long running invitational will be the first race for many City schools. With 16 City schools listed as entries, this will be perhaps the best representation the City has had at this Griffith Park meet. Info concerning the entries, the running schedule, and directions to the meet can be found on the Bell-Jeff website.   link      Look for the following schools to running in this meet.    course map1     course map2

Sept. 15: Woodbridge: Team results at this mega meet give us a good look at how things might play out later this season.

Boys   Girls
Palisades Charter 1:18.57 San Pedro 1:33.50
San Pedro 1:19.14 Palisades Charter 1:36.35
ECR 1:23.12 ECR 1:41.03
Taft 1:25.44 Taft 1:41.43

If you are looking for a City hero at Woodbridge, look no farther than the 17th overall finisher. That finisher was Marissa Williams, the super-soph from Palisades Charter. She was the 2nd best 10th grader in the field and her 17:08 put her only 56 seconds behind the premire cross country runner in the country, Sarah Baxter. Lorena Garcia of San Pedro also ran a fine race and finished 76th overall in a time of 17:55. Two City boys took top honors at this meet. They were Steve Correa of San Pedro (24th in 14:54) and Jonathan Tewodros of Palisades Charter (41st in 15:02).

Sept. 8: Laguna Hills Invitational: San Pedro, always a power house in City cross country, opened their season at the Laguna Hills Invitational. Especially noteworth was the performance by City 1600 champion, Steve Correa. Running in a strong field, Correa finished 4th in 15:26. San Pedro also put Manuel Vargas and Charlie Nettle in the top 100.    Top100Boys
This Invitational also saw quality performances from Ashley Carrera (12) and Danielle Nunez (10). Carrera won her Div. 1 race in 19:02 and Nunez finished 11th in her Div. 1 race with a time of 19:59.

Sept. 7: Seaside Invitational: Always a great early season opener, the Seaside Invitational often points to some of the top talent in cross country running. Looking at the boys' 12th grade results, Jonathan Tewodros and Drake Johnston (12th in 15:09 & 13th in 15:16) earned the title of top talent as they finished high up the ladder in a field of 290 runners. Among the 10th grade girls, Marissa Williams of Palisades was a standout winning that race in 16:55. Another outstanding 10th grade performance was turned in by Birmingham's Ryan Alexander who finished 4th in 15:39. This was a nice improvement over his 16:18 freshman win last year. --       seaside city boys results         seaside city girls results
